Signs You Have a Rodent Problem
Rodents are nocturnal and avoid human activity, which means an infestation is often well established before it becomes obvious. Evidence can show up in an attic, garage, crawlspace, cabinet, wall or ceiling void, or around exterior entry points.
Watch for these indicators:
- Scratching or thumping sounds in walls, ceilings, garages, or the attic, particularly at night.
- Droppings along baseboards, inside cabinets, near food storage areas, or in stored items.
- Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood framing, wiring, or insulation.
- Greasy rub marks along walls, baseboards, and exterior travel routes where rodents move repeatedly.
- Nesting material like shredded insulation, paper, or fabric in undisturbed areas.
- Unusual odors in enclosed spaces, storage areas, or near an entry point.
Visible evidence may show only part of the activity because rodents often stay hidden and follow established travel routes. A prompt rodent inspection can help identify where activity is occurring and what needs attention.

Stopping the Cycle of Reinfestation
Traps may remove individual rodents, but they don’t address hidden nesting areas, travel routes, or the entry points that allowed them in. Rodents in walls and attics may not encounter a trap unless it is placed along confirmed activity routes between nesting sites and food sources.
Effective rodent control requires three things working together:
- Targeted trapping and baiting. We place traps and bait along confirmed activity routes to reduce the active population.
- Structural exclusion. We physically seal entry points with materials rodents can’t chew through, including galvanized mesh, hardware cloth, and construction sealant.
- Exterior rodent management. This addresses rodent activity around the property before it reaches the structure.
Exterior bait stations can be part of an ongoing rodent management plan when activity and property conditions call for them. Trapping and baiting work best alongside sanitation and harborage reduction, including removing accessible food and water, securing storage, managing clutter and vegetation near structures, and maintaining sealed openings.

Rodent Species Common to Murrieta
Roof rats, Norway rats, and house mice each behave differently and require tailored treatment approaches. Identifying the species helps determine where to inspect, how to interpret evidence, and which exclusion and control measures may be appropriate.
- Roof rats. These agile climbers prefer elevated spaces, nesting in attics, rooflines, palm trees, and dense vegetation. They may enter structures through roofline gaps, utility penetrations, and broken vents, often leaving evidence in attics and along elevated travel routes.
- Norway rats. These are larger burrowers that nest along foundations, under concrete slabs, and in crawlspaces. They are associated with ground-level areas and can enlarge existing entry gaps over time.
- House mice. Smaller and highly adaptable, these rodents can squeeze through very small openings to establish nests inside wall cavities, cabinets, garages, and behind household appliances.
If you have found rodent evidence or hear activity inside your structure, call Robbins Pest Control at (951) 612-2262 or contact us online to schedule a rodent inspection and discuss removal, exclusion, and prevention.
